Cosmetic Dental Repair Options for a Broken Tooth
A broken tooth can be both painful and embarrassing, but there are cosmetic dental repair options that you can use to help repair it. Depending on the type of damage, different procedures and materials can be used. It is important to understand which options are right for you.
What different options are there?
Different repair options have other uses. Here we will provide an overview of each potential treatment option and when it is most likely to be utilized.
Dental bonding
This is usually used for minor cosmetic dental repair. It is generally a quick and reasonably priced process in which a soft resin is applied to teeth, then molded to the correct shape and cured with UV light. It can fix gaps and cracks but can be used to cover up yellowed teeth, as well.
Veneers
Veneers are also aimed at repairing minor damage. They are thin shells of porcelain or resin that are placed onto teeth to hide imperfections.
Sealants
Dental sealants are made from liquid plastic that hardens on your teeth upon UV light exposure. They are frequently used preventatively in children to prevent tooth decay from happening later in life. The plastic helps to prevent bacteria from reaching the teeth.
Fillings
Fillings are used to repair moderate levels of tooth decay. After damaged parts of your tooth are drilled out, a metal composite or plastic-based amalgam is used to fill the cavities to prevent further damage. These can be metallic-looking, or they can be color-matched to your teeth so that they look more natural.
Crowns
Crowns are used both to cap your teeth after procedures and as stand-alone cosmetic dental options. They can be used to cover up yellowed teeth and can also be used to reshape teeth. A variety of materials can be used, including metals and ceramics. As with fillings, metals are easy to see in your mouth, but materials like ceramic blend in with your natural teeth more and help restore your smile better.
Root canals
If you have extensive tooth decay or a badly chipped tooth, you may need a root canal. This is a procedure where the tooth is drilled into, and damaged parts are removed. Then fillings and crowns are used to restore the tooth and prevent further damage.
Dental implants
At times, your teeth may be so damaged that they need to be removed entirely. If this is the case, then implants may be used. Metal rods will be drilled into your jawbone, and then artificial teeth will be permanently attached to them. This is a very extensive procedure that can take many months to complete. Implants can be used to either replace a whole row of teeth at once or just a single tooth.
Dental bridges
Another option after having a tooth extracted is a dental bridge. This is when an artificial tooth is attached to crowns on either side, and the whole structure is used to replace a row of teeth in your mouth.
